Overview

I helped a large ecommerce company with over 20,000 employees overhaul their internal employee portal and experience in a two month span. Their previous portal was splintered into several different websites, all with outdated branding, inconsistent visual design, and very frustrating user experience. I collaborated with client engineers, project managers, and various stakeholders to deliver both a discovery effort (including user research) and a complete redesign.

Weeks 1-2: Discovery

I spoke with 10+ employees from different departments and different roles within the organization to understand employee pain points and goals, and leveraged existing analytics on the backend to help determine the most common user journeys. I synthesized all this discovery work into a Key Findings Report that allowed the team to move forward with a clear direction for the product.

Weeks 3-4: Wireframes

Using our Key Findings, and with frequent review and discussion with stakeholders from different departments, I created wireframes for 5 landing pages, search results, and a profile view for the site.

Weeks 5-6: Visual design

I collaborated with the company’s Enterprise Design Systems team to make sure the visual was aligned with the organization’s internal brand. I enjoyed infusing the UI with the company’s fun, exuberant personality!

Weeks 7-8: Handoff & QA

I worked collaboratively with the developer on this project throughout the entire process, so that I was well aware of any technical limitations or capabilities during the wireframe and visual design phase. During the handoff and QA process, I was in constant contact with the developer ensuring that he had what he needed to successfully bring the designs to life. I also wrote a little custom CSS.

The project launched on time, to the overwhelming enthusiasm of the team and the organization’s employees. The new portal was such a success that the organization signed on to additional design work projects with Formidable.
